چکیده

We have previously shown that antibodies raised in rabbits to certain enteric bacteria will specifically lyse, in a 51Cr release assay, the peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) of 80% of HLA-B27 positive patients with ankylosing spondylitis (B27+ AS+) but not the PBL of HLA-B27 positive normal controls (B27+ AS-). Other laboratories have been unable to reproduce these findings. This study was designed to ascertain whether this lack of reproducibility was due to a peculiarity of our B27+ AS+ patients or to technical difficulties in the complement mediated 51Cr release assay. We have shown in this blind study that the PBL of 16 out of 18 B27+ AS+ patients from a New Zealand population were lysed by our antisera but none of the PBL of 20 B27+ AS- normal controls were lysed. The phenomenon of 'cross reactivity' between certain enteric bacteria and B27+ AS+ PBL is not confined to the Sydney AS population.

Distribution of HLA-B*27 Alleles in Pa-tients with Ankylosing Spondylitis in Iran

Background: HLA-B*27 is strongly associated with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). It represents a family of alleles that differ among ethnic groups. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of HLA-B*27 alleles in AS patients and healthy controls in Isfahan (Iran). Methods: Sixty AS patients and 430 healthy blood donors were selected. All subjects were HLA-B*27 positive by ...

ASSOCIATION OF HLA-B27 WITH ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS IN ISFAHAN, IRAN

Using a standard microcytotoxicity (NIH) technique of tissue typing, the HLA-B27 antigen was identified in 30 out of 34 patients (HH.2%) with classical ankylosing spondylitis (AS), compared to 6 out of 70 controls (H.6%) (P < 0.005). We also found this antigen in 8 out of 76 (10.5%) patients with non-AS arthritis.

Possible role of enteric organisms in the pathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis and other seronegative arthropathies.

One-hundred eighty-five clinical isolates of Salmonella sp., Shigella sp., Escherichia coli, and Campylobacter sp. were tested for their ability to absorb the lymphocytotoxic activity of an antiserum (anti-Klebsiella sp. K43) directed against a specific HLA-B27-associated cell surface determinant on the lymphocytes of patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Seven of these isolates (three Sal...

Cytotoxic T lymphocytes against disease-associated determinant(s) in ankylosing spondylitis

Cytotoxic T lymphocytes, induced by stimulating the PBMC of an HLA-B27+ normal individual (B27+, AS-) with the PBMC of an HLA-identical sibling suffering from ankylosing spondylitis (AS) (B27+, AS+), specifically lyse B27+, AS+ PBMC but not PBMC from HLA-27+ or B27-, AS- normal controls, or from HLA-B27- AS patients (B27-,AS+). CTL of similar specificity can also be raised by immunizing in vitr...

Human Leukocyte Antigen B27 in 453 Asian Indian Patients with Seronegative Spondyloarthropathy

Background: Spondyloarthropathies are a group of closely related inflammatory arthritis which involve the axial skeleton and are negative for rheumatoid factor. Objective: This case-control study was conducted to examine HLA- B27 positivity in patients with seronegative spondyloarthritis (SSA) as per ESSG criteria and compare the frequency with healthy controls because a lower positivity is rep...
